Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net June 7, 2004, 4:11 pm "Winters Express," Thursday, May 6, 2004, pp. A-1, A-3 Jimmy Arroyave Flags flown in honor of soldier By Debra LoGuercio, Express editor The local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars posted American flags along Railroad Avenue and Main Street on the morning of April 29 to honor staff Sgt. Jimmy Arroyave of Woodland, who was buried at the Winters Cemetery that morning. A member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Arroyave, 30, was killed in Iraq on April 15, leaving behind a wife, Rachelle, and their children Vanessa, 6, and Natalia, 2. The couple was expecting a third child. Arroyave also has another daughter, Katie, 11. He is also survived by his mother, Carmeza Brennan of Woodland. Although Arroyave was not a Winters resident, he has relatives who reside in Winters. Arroyave's death was due to a noncombat-related vehicle accident northeast of Ar Ramdi, Iraq. He was assigned to Combat Service Support Battalion 1, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton. He joined the Marine Corps in 1993 when he was 19 years old, planning to have a military career. Woodland Mayor Matt Rexroad, also a Marine, has established a memorial fund in Arroyave's name. Rexroad has taken personal responsibility for acting as trustee of the account, to ensure that the money is divided equally between Arroyave’s children. Anyone wishing to contribute to the account can make a donation to The Jimmy Arroyave Memorial Fund, River City Bank, 199 Main Street, Woodland, CA 95695.
