Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net June 7, 2004, 4:20 pm "Winters Express," Thursday, April 15, 2004 Lillian Rowe Lillian Barrett Wood Rowe, long time rural Davis resident, died April 1, 2004 at the age of 100 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Marda and Jim Henry in Dixon. Born in Pendleton, Indiana on Sept. 16, 1903 she grew up on a farm and was the first girl in that state to study agriculture in high school. She met the late John O. Rowe, a native of Davis, at the Chicago International Livestock Show in 1922 when both were exhibiting the same Milking Shorthorn breed of cattle. After returning from England, where she studied psychology and international relations on a Quaker scholarship at Woodbrooke College, Lillian resumed her long distance courtship with John O., and came to California as his bride in 1927. Her life centered around her large extended family - she made their costumes, 4-H uniforms, passed on her values and family history, and when they were interested, gave them cattle, carrying on an interest in livestock spanning several generations. At the time of her marriage to John O., Lillian brought some of her own cattle with her to Davis and together they developed the internationally known Innisfail Herd of Milking Shorthorns, still prominent today. Lillian maintained her personal ownership of descendants of these original animals until 1999 when she distributed them to her grandchildren. During these years Innisfail bred and owned a number of national Grand Champions, Honor Roll cows and All Americans. Lillian was recognized in 2003 by the California State Fair, representing the Innisfail Herd as the longest exhibitor in the history of the fair. After joining the Rowe family, who were early "Davisville" residents, Lillian began to gather local memorabilia, which is being assembled at the Yolo County archives. She helped save the fig trees on the Davis campus of the University of California planted by Jerome Davis, and was involved in the attempt to save the oldest structure on campus, an early irrigation reservoir in the path of a proposed new road through the arboretum. Lillian also researched the historical records of the local Tremont Mite Society, one of the oldest women’s organizations in California, for the words that are on the monument in front of the old Tremont Church south of Davis. Lillian Rowe leaves behind six children: Evelyne and husband Richard Rominger of Winters; Stuart and wife Emily Brooks Rowe of Davis; Charles and wife Dr. Joan Dean Rowe of Capay; James and wife Sharon Rowe of Twin Falls, Idaho; Marda and husband Jim Henry and Bink and husband Gary Eason, both of Dixon. she also leaves sisters Esther Benedict of Laguna Beach, California and Laura Swain of Laramie, Wyoming, and sister-in-law Elizabeth Wood of Pendleton, Indiana. She also leaves many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Preceding her death were her husband of 53 years John O. Rowe, brother Wilbur Wood and sister Ruth Specht. At her request, a private memorial service will be held. Memorials may be made to Yolo Hospice, PO Box 1014, Davis CA 95617-1014; Davis International House, 10 College Park, Davis CA 95616; American Milking Shorthorn Society (AMSS) Endowment Fund, 800 Pleasant Street, Beloit WI 53511; or Tremont Mite Society, 1335 Blackberry Court, Dixon CA 95620.
