A Winters resident for 90 years, Mr. Hubert was born to John and Artimissa (Davis) Hubert on Dec. 5, 1909 in Palermo. At the time of his birth, his father was working the orange groves. Mr. Hubert's grandfather, Harris Hubert, settled in Pleasants Valley in the 1890s. As a child, Bud and his family lived and worked on the Pleasant Ranch, where he attended Pleasant's Valley School. There he met Welda Tucker, his wife to be, who was a daughter of a pioneer family who had settled in Winters in the 1870s. During the 1920s Bud's father owned and operated a gas station at Fourth Street and Grant Avenue. Bud attended Winters Elementary School. He often told the story about the school swaying back and forth when the wind would blow. He married Welda in 1932. Bud was employed as a foreman by the Gaddini Ranch. He served in this position for 10 years. Two sons were born to the Hubert family during this time. In 1942, Mr. Hubert purchased the Sky High Fruit Ranch, next to Welda's father's ranch, the Tucker homestead. The mountaintop orchard was known for having the first apricots of the season, sent to the local and eastern markets. Though the orchard had been neglected for a long time, with hard work Mr. Hubert was successful and paid off the ranch in short order. Two daughters were born in the early 1940s. Bud was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. This love has been passed on to his sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his sons Bud, of Yolo, and John and his wife Judith, of Gualala; daughters Gail Gage and her husband Richard, of Winters, and Vicky Hayes and her husband Dale of Washington; grandchildren Lynnette, Elsie, Cara, Jody, Jamie, Mike, Joe, Doug, Nathan, Bill and Lee. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hubert was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Welda, in 1983. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, April 13, at the Winters Cemetery. Remembrances are requested to the Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95697. Additional Comments: Submitted with the permission of the "Winters Express," 312 Railroad Ave., Winters, CA 95694.
