Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net June 11, 2004, 2:44 pm "Winters Express," Thursday, May 27, 2004 Christopher Contrera Rojo Christopher Contrera Rojo passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at the age of 90. Born March 29, 1914 in Pahala (the big island) of the Hawaiian Islands, he came to California with his family as a child. Chris was the youngest of nine children born to Fernando and Antonia Rojo, of Spain. He went to grade school in the Olive School house and started working at a young age, farming with his family. He had five children He remarried in 1954, to Carmen Martin Rojo, and together they raised their children, as she had a daughter of her own. Chris was an honorable and honest man, with many trades in his lifetime. He first worked in produce in San Francisco, then as a farmer. He then owned a hardware store until he owned and operated the Winters Food Center with his wife from 1954 until 1972. Together they assisted many farming families, running tabs for their groceries until their harvest came in. He worked at Travis Air Force Base for the love of airplanes. Then later, he worked for Morgan Ranch and finally, Mariani Nut Company, until his retirement. Christ had a brilliant mind. While working for Mariani's he invented a nutcracker device that is still in use to this day. He was known for having a strong grip, hard work, a loving heart and a good story. Chris and Carmen loved traveling together to many places, such as Spain, throughout Europe and to his native land, Hawaii. He was always working with his hands to create or invent things, woodworking, mechanics and farming equipment were just a few of his interests. Chris is survived by his sisters, Josie Mermod and her husband, Jack, of San Leandro, Delores Gregg and her husband Bill, of Sacramento; son Fred Rojo, of Woodland; daughters Isabel Rojo, of Massachuttes, Antoinette Fischer and her husband Roger, of Arizona, Mary Coleman and her husband Rae, of Sacramento and his stepdaughter Carmen Parker and her husband Dale. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen Martin-Rojo, his parents, his infant son Johnny Rojo, his brother Dick Rojo, sisters Isabel Martin, Lita Yanci and Antoinette Barranco. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 26, from 4-6 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel, at 116 D Street, in Davis. Per Chris' request, there will be a graveside service at the Winters Cemetery on Thursday, May 27, at 2 p.m. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Wesley Hall, 201 Russell Street, immediately following the service.
