John William Gates

John William Gates died Friday Feb. 15, 2002, in a Concord hospital at the age
of 77 after a long illness.

Mr. Gates was born on Aug. 6, 1924 in Arizona and had lived in Woodland for five
years in the late 1980s. He spent more than the last 25 years living in the
Vallejo/Benicia area.

He was a retired hospital corpsman for the United States Navy for more than 20
years, retiring in 1962. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War.

While in Woodland, he was a member as well as past president and vice president
of the Sylvan Sam RV Club of Woodland.

Mr. Gates is survived by his wife Barbara Gates of Benicia; daughters Joan
Cardinale of San Jose and Janet Cary of North Pole, Alaska; son, John M. Gates
of Santa Clara; stepdaughter Jeanette Gates of Benicia; grandchildren Josette
Souza, Jennifer Laugharn, Gena Cardinale, Daniel Cary and Jammie Morgan; great
grandchildren, Mitchell Laugharn and Brandon Souza.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Passalacqua
Funeral Chapel with Deacon John Flanigan of St. Dominic's Church officiating.

His ashes will be scattered at sea in the Carquinez Straits.
