Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net June 25, 2004, 2:30 pm Woodland "Daily Democrat," Thursday, June 24, 2004 Richard Earl 'Pug' Burke Richard Earl "Pug" Burke died in Sacramento, Sunday, June 20, 2004 at age 85. Born Feb. 27, 1919 in Woodland, Mr. Burke was the son of the late Richard Sidney and Virginia Mae (Loranger) Burke of Esparto. He played baseball for the Woodland Oaks and was in Woodland Elks team at Clark Field in 1935. Mr. Burke was a World War II Marine veteran, who served in the Pacific Theater in the Marianas Islands, Ryukyu Islands and as part of the occupying force in Japan. He was honorably discharged Jan. 26, 1946 as a Private First Class and qualified as rifle expert. He was a 50-year member of the VFW Post No. 8762 of West Sacramento. He retired as the under-sheriff of Yolo County in 1976, joining the state of California Department of Justice. Survivors include his children, Richard Edward Burke and Patricia Ann Terry; daughter-in-law, Evelyn (Howard) Burke; son-in-law, Philip A. Terry; brothers, Stephen and Barry Burke; sisters, Mary Campi and Virginia "Billie" Brackett; grandchildren, Richard and Gregory Burke and Philip J., Patrick and Jennifer Terry; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Daniel Burke and Ryan and Cameron Terry. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois Geraldine (Dowell) Burke; and brother, James Burke. Memorials are preferred to the charity of donor's choice. Services: Closed casket visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, at River Cities Funeral Chapel of West Sacramento. Friends are invited to attend graveside services at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 860 West St., Woodland.
