Motta died at his home in Carmichael Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at age 94. He had been a resident of Carmichael for the past 40 years. Mr. Motta was born on the family ranch in the Salinas Valley April 5, 1909 to Mary and Gildo Motta. The family moved to Arizona before it was a State. They farmed there until moving to Woodland in 1920. His parents owned a farm North of Woodland. Mr. Motta attended Woodland schools and graduated from Woodland High School in 1927. He also attended Heald Business College. Upon graduation Mr. Motta went to work for Diamond Match Co. He had a 45 year career with the company, retiring from Diamond International as a corporate officer in 1974. While working in Stockton he met his wife of 53 years, Ethel Clancy Motta who died in 1989. Mr. Motta was transferred to Chico where the couple lived 25 years and raised their three children, a daughter Judy and two sons Tom and Jim. In 1964 the corporate headquarters were moved to Sacramento, and the Mottas moved to Carmichael. Survivors include his children Judy Motta Simonsen and husband Toby of Carmichael; sons Tom Motta and wife Andrea of Chico and Jim Motta and wife Martha of Sammamish, Wash. He leaves eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves his companion of 13 years, Virginia Hamilton and his sister, Mary (Motta) Heney of Woodland. In addition to his wife, Ethel, Mr. Motta was preceded in death by his father and mother and three brothers, Walter, James and Peter who was killed in World War II. A grandson Thomas Motta died in 1990. Mr. Motta was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Carmichael where he was an usher for 35 years. He had been a director of the Sacramento Valley Better Business Bureau and had been an Elk member for 61 years. Visitation will be today Thursday, Jan. 22, 4 to 6 p.m. at Lind Bros. Mortuary, 4221 Manzanita Ave., Carmichael, with a vigil service to follow at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 5751 Locust Ave., Carmichael, 95608. The family requests memorials be directed to San Juan Mercy Hospice Center, 3400 Data Dr., Rancho Cordova, CA 95670; to St. John the Evangelist Church Building Fund; or the charity of donor's choice.
