Elizabeth Allen

Elizabeth Allen died at St. Helena Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at age 98.

Born Dec. 17, 1906, in Dunnigan, Mrs. Allen was the youngest of the 11 children
of Frank and Mary McCullough. Her maternal grandfather, John Gapen and
grandmother, Anjanett Wallace came to California in 1849. Her father was born in
Illinois, farmed and raised mules, cattle and other livestock. She often said,
she learned to ride a horse before she could walk as did the rest of the family.
She attended the Dunnigan Grammar School and Pierce High School in College City.
She married Charles Garland in 1928 and resided near Dunnigan. Mr. Garland died
in 1947. She married Clarence Allen in 1950, and they lived in College City,
where her husband did carpentry work and raised almonds. Upon retirement they
moved to the Cecil Ranch near Grimes.

Survivors include her son, Wallace Garland and wife Geraldine of Angwin;
granddaughters, Anjeanette Garland of Beaver Creek, Ore., and Sarah Baker of
Burbank; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband,
Charles Garland, in 1947; and second husband, Clarence Allen, in 1995.

The family requests memorials be directed to the restoration of the old Dunnigan
church, Union Church of Dunnigan, P.O. Box 203, Dunnigan 95937, in her behalf.

Services: Respecting the wishes of Mrs. Allen, her remains were given to
research to UC Davis.
