Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net January 2, 2005, 11:39 pm "Winters Express," Thursday, November 11, 2004 William Clyde Alexander passed away on Nov. 4, 2004. He was born in San Jose on Feb. 22, 1922 to Clyde and Ellse Alexander, where he lived with his family until 1965, when they moved to Winters. Mr. Alexander was a prominent Catholic, as well as an active Knight of Malta and past president of Serra International. He was also a member of the Society of California Pioneers. In San Jose his occupation was building and designing custom homes, subdividing Western Gardens in the Willow Glen area, and, with his friend Robert Dodge, in the exclusive Linden Oaks subdivision. At his ranch in Winters, Mr. Alexander grew and packed cherries, apricots, peaches and prunes. He was a board member of the California Apricot Producers and a long-time member of Blue Anchor and Sunsweet. A pioneer in the dried fruit industry, many of his innovations have been adopted industry-wide. He was also the first to sun-dry tomatoes in California on a commercial basis. In 2001, he sold the ranch property in Winters and moved to Carmel Valley with Catherine, his wife of 59 years. His sister, Patricia, also lives there. Bill loved to have large family dinners, especially at the ranch, with a roaring fire going in the fireplace. He was a great Cal fan, especially of the football program, and his family and friends are sorry he didn’t get to enjoy this Cal season. He attended Bellarmine College Prep, University of Santa Clara, and studied in the Architectural School at the University of California at Berkeley. He also served in the Marine Corps during World War II. Mr. Alexander is survived by his five children, Leslie and her husband, Stan, Lindsey and her husband, Steven, Lorie and her husband, Michael, Matthew and his wife, Penelope and Lisa and her husband Howard. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on Monday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Carmel Mission. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Bellarmine College Prep or Santa Clara University, in his name. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main Street, Watsonville, CA 95076.
