Lider William "Bill" Robert Lider, a lifelong Yolo County resident, died March 19, 2004, at Sierra Healthcare in Davis. He was 90. Born Aug. 8, 1913, he was raised on the family farm in south Esparto with his six siblings. He attended Sacramento Junior College, then graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor's degree in pomology. He was a member Phi Beta Kappa and sang in the Cal Aggie Christian Association choir. For six years he served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He worked for Spreckels, Cal West Seeds and Garner/Hirahara Seed as a field man. In the 1940s he became a farmer, raising sugar beets, tomatoes, alfalfa and corn. He also gained a reputation for the kindness he showed German prisoners of war who harvested his crops, his family said. An avid hunter into his late 80s, he and his friends trekked semi-annually to Nevada and Wyoming in pursuit of deer, elk and turkey. He also enjoyed fishing with his buddies off the California coast. He was honored with lifetime memberships to several organizations, including the Woodland Kiwanis Club, the Woodland Elks Club, the Yolo Sportsman's Club and the Sacramento Safari Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte. He is survived by his daughter, Roberta Glendenning of Carson City, Nev.; brothers, Frances "Bob" Lider of Redding, Lloyd Rider of Oregon, James Lider of St. Helena; sisters, Ruth Meythaler of Concord, Virginia Busteed of Washington state; and dear friend Phoebe McAllister of Davis. A graveside gathering will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cottonwood Cemetery at County Roads 25 and 89 in south Esparto.
