Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net June 30, 2004, 10:33 pm "The Davis Enterprise," Tuesday, March 2, 2004 John Wylder John Wylder of Napa died Feb. 28, 2004, following surgery at St. Helena Hospital in St. Helena. He was 82. He was born to Anna and Onofry Wasylyshyn on June 4, 1921, at the foot of Mount Sugarloaf in South Deerfield, Mass. His parents immigrated to the United States from Skalat, Ukraine, in the early 1900s. He spent his early years on a family farm fronted by the Connecticut River in Whately, Mass. After losing the farm in 1928, the family moved to lower Manhattan, New York City. There he worked his way through school by delivering prescriptions, from 3 to 10 p.m. daily, for Bendiner and Schlesinger drug store. He graduated from the High School of Commerce in 1940, then began working for the Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company. He entered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in October 1942, during World War II. He served as a staff sergeant with the Combat Engineers in Normandy, Belgium, Holland and Germany, and was awarded Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals. After returning from military service, he married the girl he left behind, Dorothy "DoDo" Gruchowsky, at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on Nov. 11, 1945. He then returned to Chicago Pneumatic as office manager, salesman and district manager for the Northeastern United States, during which time his family lived in New York and Lexington, Mass. He retired from the company after 43 years. In 1988 he and his wife moved from Tuxedo Park, N.Y., to Vacaville to be near their daughter, Barbara Wochok, and four grandchildren. Once there, he enjoyed the company of his Pepperill Court neighbors. He was a member of the American Legion, Ukrainian Catholic War Veterans and, most recently, the Odd Fellows in Napa Valley. He was also an avid writer of letters to the editor in local newspapers, and he loved gardening, fishing, golf, croquet, poker, chess, gourmet food, geography, military history and, perhaps most of all, playing Santa Claus. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Wasylyshyn of New York. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of The Meadows in Napa; daughter, Barbara Wochok and her husband Zachary of Davis, and grandchildren, Adria, Alexis, Zachary and Laryssa; son, John Wylder and his wife Lyn of Lake Oswego, Ore.; sister, Mary Raymond of Maryland; brother, Steven Wylder of North Carolina; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends, new and old, in particular Michael Goral. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home, 180 E. Monte Vista Ave., in Vacaville. A funeral will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Petro Dyachok of St. Andrew's Ukrainian Church of Sacramento officiating. A private burial is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Andrew's, 7001 Florin Road, Sacramento CA 95828. Nadeau Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
