Torguson Elizabeth Annette (Betty) Torguson died Feb. 15, 2004, at Sierra Health Care Convalescent Hospital in Davis. She was 86. Torguson was born Aug. 16, 1917, to John and Letha Goettsch of Inavale, Neb. She spent her early childhood on a homestead near Wall, S.D., and also lived in Michigan and Minnesota before her family settled in Sioux Falls, S.D., where she graduated from high school. Torguson married Donald Torguson in 1939 and they made their home in Sioux Falls until 1948, when Don Torguson accepted a position as an insurance company office manager in Aberdeen, S.D. While there, Betty Torguson was employed as a secretary for the Department of Veterans' Affairs and also did secretarial work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Torguson family moved to Davis in 1960, when Betty Torguson accepted a secretary position with the UC Davis Department of Vegetable Crops, where she worked until her retirement in 1982. In retirement, Betty enjoyed reading, gardening, watching Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics on television and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She hosted many memorable family gatherings, relatives said. "Betty will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends as an extremely generous, kind, cheerful and considerate person," relatives said. "She always had a smile for everyone and will be dearly missed by all." Torguson is survived by her five children, Eric Torguson (Sandra) of Sacramento; Terry Klinger of Davis; Donna Singleton (Donald) of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; Bruce Torguson of Carson City, Nev.; and Brian Torguson of Davis. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Scott Torguson of Philadelphia; Mark Torguson of Sacramento; Kim Jung (Michael) of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; Kristi, Jay and Joel Klinger of Davis; Kelly Guerrero (David) of Davis; Taran Singleton of Maplewood, N.J.; Daniel Singleton (Karin Vermander) of Columbus, Ohio; and Shelby Torguson of Portland, Ore.; and by seven great-grandchildren. Torguson was preceded in death by her parents, husband Don in 1979, sister Helen Eaton, infant grandson Mark Klinger and granddaughter Renee Torguson Salgueiro. In accordance with Torguson's wishes, no funeral will be held. A memorial service for family and friends is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Davis Cemetery.
