Born in Fairport, N.Y., on July 5, 1937, Steubing's greatest passion was his love for his wife and children. Family gatherings, hanging out and talking with his kids, and trips to their summer home at Six-Mile Lake in Canada were highly treasured moments, his family says. He was also an avid traveler throughout the United States and abroad. He loved spontaneous trips with his family. He enjoyed reading, the theater, gardening, golfing, and was a devoted San Francisco 49ers and Giants fan. Professionally, Steubing taught elementary school for 34 years, beginning his career in 1960 teaching sixth grade in Rochester, N.Y. The family moved to Davis in 1966, where Steubing taught at Valley Oak Elementary, West Davis Intermediate and Patwin Elementary schools until his retirement in 1997. He also taught adult education and summer school. He was involved with the Davis Community Children's theater, and was a devoted Little League and Davis High School softball coach. He graduated from the State University of New York in Brockport with a bachelor of arts degree in education, and held a master's in school administration from Cal State Sacramento. He is survived by his daughter, Heather Zamecnik, and her children Jacob and Kayla of Dixon; son, Bruce Steubing and wife Debra and their daughter Sophia of Carmichael; daughter, Susan Steubing of Carmichael; son, Michael Steubing of Marysville; and sister, Vivian Monson of New Jersey. A funeral for all those he touched will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Church of St. Martin, 640 Hawthorn Lane in Davis. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the donor's favorite children's charity. Additional Comments: Submitted with the permission of the "The Davis Enterprise."
