Reimer Paul Emory "Russ" Reimer, a resident of Woodland since 1973, died July 12, 2004, after a life of service to his country, community and family. He was 70 years old. He was born on March 27, 1934, to Paul and Thelma (Lowery) Reimer in Enid, Okla. In 1939, the family moved to San Francisco. He often spoke of happy days as a young boy fishing off of the docks near Fisherman's Wharf. In 1951, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served with distinction in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his military career, he earned a Commendation Medal for heroism and a Bronze Star for meritorious service under hostile fire. Following 20 years of service, he retired as a master sergeant in 1971. He and his wife, former Gibson Elementary School Principal Pat Reimer, then settled their family in Woodland. He earned a bachelor's degree from Cal State Sacramento and began a second career as a federal employee at McClellan Air Force Base. During this time, he also restored the family Victorian located at 656 College St. The house is now listed on the registry of historic homes in Woodland. In his retirement years, he was active in the community, serving as a member of the Woodland Kiwanis, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing and vacationing at his cabin on the Russian River. He always took pride in voting and taught his children to appreciate the freedoms all Americans share. Preceded in death by his loving wife Pat, he is survived by his sisters, Jannie Lee Fitzgerald of Santa Rosa, and JeAnn Craemer and Fran Jackson of Yucca Valley; his daughters, Connie Smith and her husband Dwayne and Cassie Reimer Redman and her husband Frank of Woodland; and his son, Maj. Russell Reimer and his wife Julie of Avon Lake, Ohio. Four grandchildren - Jessica Smith of Sacramento, Patricia Smith of Woodland and Austin and Addison Reimer of Avon Lake - also survive him.
