Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net January 20, 2005, 10:20 pm "The Davis Enterprise," Monday, July 19, 2004 Sally C. Underwood Sally Cooney Underwood died July 14, 2004, at her home in Davis. She was 71 years old. She had been under the care of the UC Davis Hospice. Born April 20, 1933, in Medford, Ore., she received a bachelor's degree from Willamette University. Following a year in Paris, where she taught English conversation to French students at the Lycee Sophie-Germain, she returned to the United States for graduate work. She received her master's degree in English from UC Berkeley, where she met Douglas Underwood. They married on Aug. 21, 1958, and moved to Walla Walla, Wash., where they lived for 40 years. During her years in Walla Walla, she participated in numerous educational, civic and church organizations. She taught English as a Second Language at Walla Walla Community College. She was elected twice to the Walla Walla School Board, and served on the city Planning Commission. She was also a member and officer of the General (National) and Washington State Commissions on the Status and Role of Women in the United Methodist Church, and represented her community college on a statewide committee of community college instructors. She is a past president of the Walla Walla League of Women Voters, a past board member and officer of American Association of University Women and United Way there, and a former board member of WAESOL, the state professional organization for ESL instructors. After moving to Davis in 1999, she was active at International House as a board member, a docent, a member of the Program Committee and as discussion leader for the Great Decisions foreign policy discussion group. She was also a member of the Davis League of Women Voters and University Farm Circle. She was a member of the Davis Community Church. She is survived by her husband, Douglas; two daughters, Deborah Underwood of San Francisco and Judith Underwood and her husband Ian Gent of Cupar, Scotland, and their children Sarah and Sophie Gent. She is also survived by her brother, William Cooney and his wife Evelyn of San Jose and their son William. A memorial service will take place Aug. 6 in Walla Walla. Memorial donations may be sent to International House, Davis, the American Cancer Society, the Lymphoma Research Foundation at 8800 Venice Blvd., Suite 207, Los Angeles 90034, or to the hospice of the donor's choice.
