Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net July 3, 2004, 12:58 am "The Davis Enterprise," Monday, February 9, 2004 David Charles Sternberg David Charles Sternberg of Davis died Feb. 5, 2004, at Sutter Davis Hospital. He was 60. He was born in Portland, Ore., Aug. 19, 1943. He received a bachelor's degree in botany from Oregon State University in 1965. In 1972, after working under Prof. Alfred Sussman, he was awarded his doctorate in botany from the University of Michigan. He then received a National Research Council fellowship to work with Dr. Elwin Reese and Dr. Mary Mandels at the Natick Labs in Natick, Mass. He later lived and worked in the Washington, D.C., area for three years before moving to Redding, Conn., where he joined the research staff of the Danish company Novo. He continued working as a microbiologist for NovoNordisk for 20 years. He moved to Davis with his family in August 1990. He was employed by Novozymes Biotech at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Linda Garber Sternberg; a daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, Nancy, Tony and Natalie Freeman of Newark, Del.; a son, Philip Sternberg of Davis; his mother, Elsa Sternberg of Portland; a sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Stan Jasperson of Kansas City, Kan.; a father-in-law and mother-in-law, Irv and Dora K. Garber of Louisville, Ky., a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Susan Flack of Washington and Ed Garber of Louisville. A memorial service will be held in the Sternberg home Sun., Feb. 8, 2004, at 3 p.m. The family requests donations in the name of the deceased be made to Human Rights Watch, www.hrw.org, Oxfam America, www.oxfamamerica.org or the Southern Poverty Law Center, www.splcenter.org.
