Ross Janice (Jan) Edith Manne Ross of Davis died Jan. 24, 2004, at Sutter Davis Hospital following emergency surgery. She was 89. She was born April 14, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the only child of Rena W. and Jacob Manne. She graduated from high school at age 16 and four years later received a degree from Adelphi College in New York, where she majored in French. In 1939 she married Albert Ross. Soon after, they moved to Scarsdale, N.Y., where they raised their children, Eric and Kathy. She was able to help her husband with some of the bookkeeping necessary for his work as an attorney and be a stay-at-home mom as well. She generously gave her time to causes she believed in, working as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, Jewish Family Services, the National Federation for the Blind and the local PTA. She and her husband also spent many hours working on Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidential campaigns. Her family said one of her most exciting memories was attending Eisenhower's second inaugural ball in Washington, D.C. Her husband died in 1969 and although she missed him terribly, her family said she continued to live her life with courage and enthusiasm. She sought out interesting people and new friends, engaging in pursuits that provided her challenges and personal enrichment. She enjoyed golf and played skillfully. She loved to travel and experience new cultures. She visited every continent except Antarctica and could recount stories from each trip in detail. She also made new friends at the card table over the years, her family said, playing both party and duplicate bridge while everyone enjoyed her sharp mind and quick wit. She was a voracious reader who could solve nearly any crossword puzzle and never found herself at a loss for words in any conversation. In 1974 she went to work for H&R Block doing tax preparation. She continued to work for the company for 14 years. She served many of the same clients year after year, and even continued to prepare their taxes after she moved to Davis. She also had a fine artistic side that showed in all aspects of her life, her family said. With a needle and thread she proved an expert seamstress, and could knit and crochet beautifully as well. The garden also provided her a labor of love. Her beautiful flower arrangements won countless awards at flower shows. She enjoyed sharing this gift with others, teaching flower arranging classes and judging competitions. In 1988 she moved to Davis to be closer to her daughter's family and quickly became active in the community. She volunteered at All Things Right & Relevant when the consignment store opened and for the rest of her life. She kept playing bridge with a passion, took classes and enjoyed spending more time with her family. In 2003 she moved to Covell Gardens. Though her health forced her to slow down, her family said she reached out for new friends and challenges. At 88, she began studying Spanish, joined a Dynaband exercise class and became a key player on the Covell Gardens Trivial Pursuit Team. Always fiercely loyal to those she cared about, she will be greatly missed, her family said. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Eric Ross and Forshia Ross of Glendale, R.I.; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Overstreet Hayes and Richard Hayes of Davis; her grandchildren, Tiffany Libardi, Daxton Ross, Jason and Lisa Overstreet; and her great-grandchildren, Devin Ross and Shanell, Chelsea, Alyssa and Anthony Libardi. A memorial celebration of her life will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road. Donations in her name may be made to All Things Right & Relevant, 1640 E. Eighth St., a nonprofit thrift and consignment store that supports local charities.
