Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net July 3, 2004, 1:35 am "The Davis Enterprise," Saturday, January 24, 2004 Daniel J. Rabin Daniel J. Rabin of Fresno died in an auto accident on Jan. 9, 2004. He was 36. He was born in Woodland on July 5, 1967, and grew up in Davis. He attended North Davis Elementary School, Emerson Junior High School and Sacramento Country Day School, and graduated from Davis High School in 1985. He earned his bachelor's degree at California State University, Chico, where he met his wife Michelle. While at Chico he also volunteered at a battered women's shelter, participated in the Jewish Student Union and taught at a local Sunday school. He spent his junior year abroad in Israel, studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After graduating from college, he worked in Sacramento for a year at the St. Patrick's Home for seriously emotionally disturbed adolescents. He went on to attend Chicago Medical School, from which he graduated in 1997. He received a grant from the National Health Service Corps and in return agreed to serve an underserved population. Recently he had decided to extend his term of service for an additional two years. He took his residency in family practice in Fresno, as part of a University of California at San Francisco program. He became board-certified in family practice in 2000, when he joined Sequoia Community Health Centers in Fresno. He also served as a physician at Community Hospital in Oakhurst. UCSF appointed him a preceptor to younger doctors and students, and he found this teaching role stimulating and rewarding. In the words of a colleague, Dr. Eric Kunkel, Rabin "exemplified what it means to be a doctor." Dan loved the outdoors and often went camping and fishing with his family. He was an accomplished skier, and went skiing with his family only a week before he died. His family said he was a man of great energy and enthusiasm for life - a highly respected physician, a loving family man, a teacher, an outdoorsman, an active member of Beth Israel Temple in Fresno and a loyal friend to many. Although his life was tragically cut short, he filled it with love of family and service to others. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Rabin; their two children, Jacob, 7, and Eliana, 4; his parents, Jane and Edward Rabin of Davis; and his sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Robert Kaplan of Norfolk, Va., and Newton, Mass. He also became a well-loved part of his wife's extended family, which included her grandmother Dorothy Meyers of Fresno; her mother and stepfather, Susan Meyers and Michael Oshan of Gilroy; her father and stepmother, Chester and Nancy Winton of Lincoln; her brother Jeffrey Winton of Santa Cruz; and many others. A funeral was held in Fresno on Jan. 13. A fund has been established for the benefit of his children, Jacob and Eliana. Contributions in Dan's memory may be sent to The Michelle Rabin Fund, c/o Fresno Jewish Day School, 6622 North Maroa, Fresno, CA 93704. Checks should be made payable to "The Michelle Rabin Fund."
