Born Jan. 15, 1910, in Ireland to Cornelius and Sarah Nash, he came to this country at the age of 14 in 1924. The family settled in Redlands to be close to other Irish relatives. After graduating from high school, Nash came to Davis in 1931 as an ornamental horticulture student at UC Davis when the town had 2,700 people and the city limits were defined by First, Seventh, A and L streets. Several years later, he met Nellie Duthie when he was the manager of the girl's softball team and she was a player. They dated for two years before marrying on Feb. 4, 1939, at Davis Community Church. While Nash was working at UCD, Central Park was being planned. His landscape class planted the trees for just $52. He was a member of the original Street Tree Committee in Davis. The rest of his working years were spent as a field supervisor for various seed companies. In his spare time, he loved to go fishing, hunting and camping. He and Nellie made many deer hunting trips to Nevada with friends. He also loved gardening and spending time with family. In years past he belonged to the Circle D folk dancing club as well the Square Rounders club in Sacramento, where he learned how to call square dances. The Lions Club was such an important part of his life that he became the district governor in 1964. He and Nellie traveled to many of the international Lions conventions over the years and enjoyed meeting many new friends. They traveled to each of the 50 states plus Denmark, China, New Zealand and the British Isles. He is survived by his daughter Carol and her husband Charles Nyholm of Davis; grandchildren, Steve Nyholm of Sacramento and Mary Carstensen and her husband Niels of Denmark; and great-grandchildren, Martin and Elisabeth Carstensen of Denmark. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie, who died in January 2003; his son, James who was killed in Vietnam in 1968; and a granddaughter, Christina Nyholm, who died in 1974. A memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Northern California Lions Sight Association, c/o Scott Crull, president, P.O.
