Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net July 8, 2004, 11:41 pm "The Davis Enterprise," Thursday, July 1, 2004 Andrew Gyorke Sr. Andrew "Andy" Gyorke Sr., a longtime Yolo County resident, died June 27, 2004, in the company of his daughter Teresa. He was 78 years old. Born Dec. 8, 1925, of Hungarian immigrant parents in Bridgeport, Conn., he entered Tufts University in Medford, Mass., in 1942. In early 1943, he joined the Naval ROTC program and was transferred to Coyote Point, south San Francisco, where he became a diesel engineer for the fleet in the South Pacific. Gyorke met Clara Sue Chiles, daughter of William Earl and Olga Chiles of Davis, in San Francisco on V-J Day at the end of World War II. They were married in Davis on Sept. 11, 1948. Six children were born between 1949 and 1963. In 1965, the family moved to Davis and have considered this home since. All six of the children graduated from Davis High School - Drew (1967), Barbara (1972), Teresa (1973), Andrew Jr. (1975), David (1977) and Libby (1981). Gyorke worked in the white-collar crime department of the district attorney's office of Yolo County. In 1972, he was candidate for the 4th Congressional District (Yolo County). He then entered the world of business as a commodities broker and warehouse owner. Planning to live until he was at least 100, he was active in business to the end. He loved great wine, good food and the company of great friends. He traveled the world and enjoyed sharing great stories. He was a loving husband, father of six, grandfather of eight and a friend of all, his family said. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Barbara. Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Sue Chiles Gyorke; children, Drew, Barbara Batt and her husband Bill, Teresa, Andrew Jr. and his wife Sarah, David and his wife Alison Good, and Elizabeth (Libby) and her husband Will Seymore Jr.; and eight grandchildren, Michelle and Ryan Gyorke, Christopher, Edward and Angela Rose Batt, Clare and Drew Gyorke and Myles Gyorke-Seymore. He is also survived by his brother George, niece Barbara Robertson and family of Gracement, Okla., and nephew George Gyorke Jr. and family of Nova Scotia. A memorial mass and celebration of his life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church, 14th and B streets in Davis. A reception will follow.
