Archer of Ottawa, Kan., died Aug. 11, 2004, at the Village Manor Nursing Home in Ottawa. He was 93. Originally from Hutchison, Kan., he was born Nov. 4, 1910, to Allen W. and Ethelyn (Meachom) Archer. He attended schools there and Hutchison Junior College and worked at the local bakery. He earned a degree in agriculture economics in 1932 from Kansas State University, where he worked in the cattle barns. On Jan. 6, 1934, he married school teacher Mildred Martha Emery, the best friend of his sister, who had splurged on a yellow dress in an attempt to snag him. They were married for more than 70 years. In 1939, he began working for Farmers Home Security Administration, a government agency that gave farmers the credit they need to guarantee the success of family farms. He held positions in several cities. During his last few years in Ottawa, he was instrumental in setting up rural water districts in Franklin County. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Army as a volunteer and served for two years at Fort Lewis, Wash. His family says Sunday drives were a favorite pastime. During good weather, he took his family to a glen with brooks, flowers and small animals that his children called "the pretty place." Family members say he was a man of honor and of strong Christian beliefs, full of love and compassion. He worked with youth groups in two churches, and for Meals on Wheels. He also published biblical quizzes. Survivors include his wife Mildred, who lives in the nursing home; three daughters, Gretchen Elaine Mason of Sarasota, Fla., Alice Kathleen Grey of Davis and Mildred Josephine Ruff of Springfield, Mo.; two sons, Douglas Winston of Virginia Beach, Va., and David Robin of Storm Lake, Iowa; one sister Ruth Good of Hutchison, Kan.; and his sister's son Norman of Lenexa, Kan. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was cremated. A memorial service is planned for 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor to a charity of the donor's choice and may be sent in care to the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa, KS 66067.
