Vogt, a professor and senior surgical pathologist at the UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center, died Aug. 13, 2004, in Sacramento from heart-related problems. He was 68. Born in Appleton, Wisc., on Sept. 6, 1935, Vogt attended the University of Wisconsin as both an undergraduate and as a medical student. He joined the pathology department at the UC Davis School of Medicine in 1986 after working at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Oakland and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinez. He lived in Carmichael. Among his many teaching duties at UC Davis were as director of the pathology residency training program in the School of Medicine and as a lecturer in courses on systemic pathology and nephrology. Vogt was regarded as a terrific teacher and someone who was very generous with his time with students. He won several outstanding teaching awards, and a Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching of Clinical Services. Vogt's clinical and research interests at the medical center focused on dermatopathology and renal pathology, where he used electron microscopy and other specialized techniques for diagnosing cancer. He was highly respected for his abilities to answer difficult medical questions. "Among pathologists, Phil was well known for having a 'very good eye,' " said Edward Larkin, a colleague in the pathology department and a friend from their naval reserve days together. "He was a terrific pathologist - one of a kind and without peer - and was always sought after for consultations and second opinions. He will be sorely missed here." In addition to his expertise in medicine and teaching, Vogt was known for having a great sense of humor and a love of music. He was a longtime member of both the Sacramento Symphony Chorus and the University Chorus at Cal State Sacramento, where he sang as a baritone. Vogt is survived by his wife, Judith. A memorial service is scheduled at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 4641 Marconi Ave. in Sacramento.
