Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net July 13, 2004, 11:03 pm "The Davis Enterprise," Tuesday, January 6, 2004 Robert M. Blake Dr. Robert "Bob" M. Blake died Dec. 22, 2003. Born in American Falls, Idaho, on Sept. 8, 1920, he was 83 years old. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1938, where he showcased his boxing talent by winning a coveted Golden Glove Award. In 1939, he moved west to California to attend Santa Ana Junior College and played on the school's baseball team. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 491st Bombardment Squadron "The Ringers," during World War II, piloting B-25 bombers during missions in the Pacific Theater. In recognition of his service, Blake was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. While attending a USO dance in Greenville, S.C., he met Katherine Elizabeth McMahan, who became his beloved wife of 56 years. Following his service overseas, he completed his undergraduate education at UC Berkeley and went on to earn a doctor of dental surgery at what was then the University of California Dental School in San Francisco in 1950. He practiced general dentistry in Santa Ana before moving to Woodland in 1962. Blake was the first orthodontist in Woodland and practiced there for more than 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association. Actively involved in the Woodland community, he was a member of the Woodland Rotary Club for many years and served as president in 1979-80. He was an avid outdoorsman who cherished spending time with family and friends while fishing and hunting. Perhaps Blake's favorite leisure time was spent devoted to playing and promoting the game of golf. He twice enjoyed the thrill of playing in the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am, now recognized as the AT&T Pro-Am, at Pebble Beach. A gifted leader, he served as president of the Yolo Fliers Club, president of the Northern California Golf Association in 1981, president of the Pacific Coast Golf Association and later president of the California Senior Golf Association in 1993. He was part of the visionary team of NCGA directors who spearheaded the development of the NCGA members' course at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach, the first golf association in the United States to embark on a program of owning its own golf course. Blake is survived by his son Randy and daughter-in-law Terry Coelho Blake of Woodland, daughter Teri Blake Kent and son-in-law Jack Kent of Los Gatos and grandchildren Robbie and Katie Blake and Bobby and Lauren Kent. He also is survived by his brothers, Arthur and Bill Blake, and his half-sister, Kathleen Knauss. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathy McMahan Blake; brother, Albert "Jim" Blake; half-brother, Courtland Blake; and grandson, John Kramer Kent. Family and friends are invited to celebrate "Dr. Bob's" life on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Yolo Fliers Club. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to the NCGA Foundation, P.O. Box 1157, Pebble Beach, CA 93953. The foundation promotes life skills and values through the game of golf to kids, with a focus on disadvantaged youths in Northern California.
