Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net July 13, 2004, 11:14 pm "The Davis Enterprise," Monday, December 30, 2002 Martha L. Hoppes Martha L. (Salisbury) Hoppes died on Dec. 25, 2002, at the age of 97. She and her twin sister Mary were born Aug. 3, 1905, in Blue Springs, Neb. The Salisbury family had two sets of twins. Considered a tomboy, she and her three sisters and six brothers were raised on a dairy farm in Blue Springs, Neb., and on a cattle ranch in the Sandhills near Long Pine, Neb. In 1925, she married Ray William Hoppes. While Ray and Martha were courting, they spent time with Charles "Slim" Lindbergh and his girlfriend during Lindbergh's barnstorming days. Since Ray had a car, they would escort Lindbergh and his girlfriend to the airport where he would introduce others to the thrills of flying. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968. She also outlived all of her brothers and sisters. She was a caring and loving mother to her sons and grandchildren. She was also very active in the Roca Methodist Church of Roca, Neb. She had many interests and enjoyed life's adventures. She enjoyed fishing and normally caught more than her share of fish. She was a competitive Pinochle player all her life. She also enjoyed reading and working jigsaw puzzles, particularly those by Thomas Kincade. Those who knew her will remember pleasing, caring nature, her sense of humor and quick wit. She was cared for at home by Yolo Hospice nurses and personnel for the last eight months of her life. She is survived by her sons Ronald Hoppes and his wife Marilyn of Davis, Donald Hoppes and his wife Jeanette of Roca, Neb; four grandchildren: Tom Hoppes, Christine Wiltshire and Mary Ellen Cecava all of Lincoln, Neb., and Shawn Hoppes of Conroe, Texas. Seven great-grandchildren also survive her. Graveside services will be in Lincoln, Neb., for her immediate family. The family requests that any memorial contributions be sent to Yolo Hospice.
