Gelatt Janet Elizabeth Gelatt, a 50-year resident of San Leandro, died on Dec. 7, 2002, at the Courtyard Healthcare Center in Davis after a long illness. She was one month short of being 87 years old. Born on Jan. 10, 1916, in San Francisco at Mt. Zion Hospital to Florence Calphurnia and John Alexander Cameron, she was the middle of three children. Her older brother Jack preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 1984. Her surviving brother Jim Cameron lives in Healdsburg with his wife Gloria and their children Christi, Joy and Kim. She earned a bachelor of arts degree and a general elementary school credential in 1937, from San Jose State University. She received a special secondary certificate the following year. She also attended Stanford University where she took graduate classes. She began her teaching career at Fortuna High School in Fortuna and then taught at Fremont High School in Oakland as a P.E. teacher. Shortly after that in 1941, she married D. Carl Gelatt. When he later joined the military, they were stationed in Pecos, Texas. Their son Ken was born in March 1945 and Terry was born in 1948. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1957 when she began substitute teaching. She became a full-time kindergarten and first-grade teacher at Jackson Elementary School in San Leandro in 1960. She taught their until her retirement in 1976. A courageous and independent woman, she will be missed by all who knew her. She and her husband of 33 years, D. Carl Gelatt, were both longtime educators. Carl died on Jan. 22, 1974. She never remarried and chose to live in their San Leandro home until her illness necessitated a move to Davis. The move allowed her to be closer to one of her sons. She leaves behind two children, Terry Gelatt of Eugene, Ore., and Kenneth L. Gelatt and his wife Sandi Redenbach of Davis. She also leaves two grandchildren, Casey Gelatt of Bremerton, Wash., and Eric Gelatt and his wife Sherry of Sacramento. She also had three-great grandchildren, Morgan Cecily Goldstein and Connor Julian Goldstein of Fremont, and David Corwin Gelatt, born on Oct. 30, 2002. Other survivors include brothers-in-law H.B. Gelatt and his wife Carol of Los Altos and Gerald Gelatt and his wife Claire of Sacramento. No memorial service is planned.
