She was 92 years old. Born April 6, 1909 to Charles and Sadie Smith in Jamestown, North Dakota she was one of four children. After receiving her teaching degree from Jamestown College in 1932, she moved to Gilford Montana to teach English and History at Gilford High School. After three years, she moved to Stanford, Montana where she accepted employment as a teacher at Stanford High School in exchange for room and board. It was while teaching there she met her future husband and the “Prince of her life,” Gunnard Ernest Johnson, who was a fellow colleague. They were married in her hometown June 10, 1939. The two then set off for Billings, Montana where they began their family and remained until 1943. It was then that a better opportunity brought them to Winters. Mae worked part time for the Winters Express and became a member of the Eastern Star. In 1950, Mae took on the responsibility of conducting the 1950 Winters census. The family moved to Herlong in 1952 where she resumed her teaching career at the junior high level in the language arts. In 1957, the family moved to Cupertino and Mae taught until her retirement in 1971. Mrs. Johnson had many passions in life. She had a tremendous love for literature, especially Shakespeare, which she could quote flawlessly up until her death. Also, she had a great love for gardening and of that which brought beauty and happiness into the world. She had a deep love and connection to family and friends, which brought her great joy and contentment throughout her life. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, her two brothers, Glenn and Roy Smith, and sister Lois Wilson. Her two daughters Lynne Garrison and her husband Terrence of Sonoma and Diane Lardelli and her husband Renzo of Davis survive her, as well as her grandchildren Mark, Scott and Ryan Garrison and Rea Lardelli. The family wishes to express a deep gratitude to the staff of the “Turning Leaf Care Facility” for their devoted love and care of Mrs. Johnson in the last years of her life. A memorial service for Mrs. Johnson is scheduled for Friday, May 11, at noon at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, located at 205 Russell Street in Winters.
