Lindsay Dale Richard Lindsay, Ph.D., a 26-year resident of Davis, died Nov. 3, 2002, at Sutter Davis Hospital following a brief illness. Born on Aug. 9, 1913, in Bunker Hill, Kan., he was 89 years old. While in Davis from 1965 to 1969, he was special assistant for health sciences to Chancellor Emil Mrak and later assistant chancellor for research and health sciences. He was instrumental in the successful founding of the UC Davis School of Medicine, including the recruitment of the school's first dean, C. John Tupper and many of the first faculty of the School of Medicine. Prior to that, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, retiring as director of USPHS/NIH Division of Research Grants in 1963. He served as deputy to the general director of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston from 1963 to 1965; associate commissioner for science at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from 1969 to 1971; associate director for medical and allied health education at Duke University from 1971 to 1975; assistant director for science coordination at the National Center for Toxicological Research in Arkansas from 1975 to 1976. He then retired from active professional life. He was a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Public Health Association, member of the Entomological Society of America and the Commissioned Officer Association of the U.S. Public Health Service, member of the honorary societies of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sybil A. (McCoy) Lindsay; daughters Martha Cover of Tucson, Ariz., Judy Clapp of Tulsa, Okla., and Pat Lindsay of Davis. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of Davis Community Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in his memory to the donor's favorite charity or student scholarships at the UC Davis School of Medicine.
