Cramer Janice Barham Cramer, a 14-year resident of Davis, died Oct. 18, 2002, following a brief battle with cancer. She was 87 years old. Born Oct. 20, 1914, in Oakland, she grew up in Emeryville and Piedmont, graduating from Piedmont High School and UC Berkeley. At Cal, she was a talented philosophy major and was active in Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She worked briefly at Wells Fargo Bank and then, in 1959, married Jerome P. Cramer. The couple settled in Berkeley where she gave birth to two sons. The family moved from Berkeley to Alamo in 1956. In 1988 she and Jerome moved to Davis. She devoted her life to her family and was a warm, loving wife and mother. In her spare time, however, she returned to Cal and earned a master's degree in art. She was an imaginative and talented artist whose abstract oil paintings won several awards in juried shows in the East Bay. Due to changing fashions in the art world and the demands of family, she stopped painting after 10 successful years, an unfortunate and premature end to a promising career. She shared her husband's love of hiking and skiing and the family enjoyed many wonderful adventures in the mountains. They were avid backpackers and devoted members of the Sierra Club. They also enjoyed many summers at the family cabin on the North Fork of the Feather River. After the boys left home for college, the couple began traveling the world. They had fabulous trips to Italy, Northern Europe, Greece, East Africa, China and Japan as well as Alaska. They were deeply interested in world affairs and for many years they led Great Decisions discussion groups at Covell Gardens in Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Jerome Cramer. She is survived by her sister, Emma Callaghan of Chester; two sons, Randall Cramer and his wife Carol of Washington, D.C., and James Cramer and his wife Helen Roland of Davis; and three grandchildren, Christopher Cramer, Caryn Cramer and Rebecca Cramer. In lieu of a funeral or memorial service, friends are asked to make donations to American Arthritis Foundation or to Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento.
