Putnam Geraldine "Gerry" Mae Putnam, a 40-year resident of Woodland, died Oct. 24, 2002, at the Sierra Convalescent Hospital in Davis, after a long struggle against breast cancer. Born Geraldine Mae Clark in Alliance, Neb., on May 1, 1918, she was 84. She was a 1936 graduate of North Platte High School, Nebraska. During the Great Depression, she worked her way through one year at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and she returned late in life to college and received an associate of arts degree from Woodland Community College. She met and married her husband John in Manhattan, Kan., while volunteering for the USO in 1941. She came to California with her infant daughter Jean as her husband was being shipped to the Pacific Theater of World War II. She was a longtime and very active member of the American Lutheran Church in Woodland. She served for many years as a choir member and took an active part in the women's circle. She was a homemaker, seamstress and teacher of home economics at Palma High School in Salinas. She made the wedding dresses for her daughters, Vicky and Kate, and for her granddaughter, Jeannie Lynn. She also made many of the Lutheran church's vestments and liturgical robes. She volunteered as a craft project coordinator at Alderson's Convalescent Hospital in Woodland and won several first prizes at the Yolo County Fair for her efforts. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Ervin Putnam; daughter, Gerry Lea Davis; son, Robert Dee Putnam; and brothers, William Edward "Ted" Clark and David Henry Clark. She is survived by her three daughters, N. Jean Canary and her husband Robert of Davis, Katherine A. "Kate" Coleman and her husband M. Lawrence of Watkinsville, Ga.; and Vicky P. Fletcher and her husband Milton of Woodland; and six grandchildren, Jeffrey B. Davis, Jeannie Lynn Watson, John E. Pankratz, Eric J. Tillman, Jared O. Dawson and Connor P. Dawson. She is also survived by three sisters, Wilma Ruth Preston and her husband Stan of San Antonio, Texas, Marianne Ridder of Callaway, Neb., and Catherine L. Sawyer and her husband Lowell; and two sisters-in-law, Madge Clark of Roanoke, Va., and Janet Clark of Salinas. The memorial service will be Friday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Woodland. Lunch will follow in the parish hall. She will be interred at a family ceremony at 2:30 p.m. at Monument Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in her memory to either the American Lutheran Church, 1114 College St., Woodland, or Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617.
