Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net July 30, 2004, 11:52 pm “Winters Express,” Thursday, January 18, 2001 Jim Lee Marion Jim Lee Marion passed away on Jan. 12, 2001 at Sutter Memorial hospital in Sacramento due to congestive heart failure. Born in Woodland on Nov. 8, 1946, he was 54 years old. Mr. Marion graduated from Woodland High School in 1964. He studied art at Yuba College, and also studied business law and business administration at Sacramento Skilled Business College, from which he graduated. A long-time Woodland resident, he moved to Winters in 1975. A former Winters City Council member and Citizen of the Year, Mr. Marion’s contributions to the Winters community were numerous and consistent over the 26 years he lived here. Being a sports announcer was one of his passions. Mr. Marion announced at Winters High School football games for eight years and for the Winters Junior Warrior football games for two years. He also served as a coach, and was a member of the Winters Little League board of directors for more than 10 years. He was inducted into the Winters Little League Hall of Fame in 1993. Mr. Marion enjoyed helping out with local youth activities, and he and his wife of 26 years, Gloria, served as Youth Day chairpersons for 10 years. Together, they shared the 1993 Citizen of the Year honor. Mr. Marion had various occupations during his lifetime. He was a machine operator for Mobile Chemical Co., a transport driver for Marvin Land Plane Co., a co-owner of All Action Awards, a truck driver for various companies, a bus driver for the first Yolo Bus run to Winters, a dispatcher for Yolo Bus, a clerk for the city of Winters public works department, and most recently was a dispatcher for Dumar’s Landscaping in Woodland. An active member of the Winters Community Theatre Group, Mr. Marion performed on stage, and also ran lights and sound. He directed plays whenever possible. He is remembered for coming alive when on stage and having the unique ability to become his character. Mr. Marion also participated in the city of Winters youth drama productions and Winters High School music department benefits. Family and friends fondly remember Mr. Marion’s delightful sense of humor (on stage and off), his love of movie matinees, his “quest” for the ultimate truck, the catfishing “extravaganzas,” his Bodega Bay camping stories, his “mania” for collecting odds and ends, his Sunday breakfasts at Myrna’s (now Putah Creek Café), the Monday Night football “madness,” his “thing” for cowboy hats and boots, and his devotion to his family. He is described by his wife, Gloria, as her best friend, and someone who will be missed by all. Mr. Marion is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Winters; son Eric Marion of Reno, Nevada; daughter Melissa Marion of Tuscon (sic), Arizona; mother, Mollie Marion of Sacramento; sisters and brothers-in-law Shirley and Brant Byrd of Elk Grove and Kathy and Mark Meredith of Woodland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis and Betty Marion of Murietta, Georgia, Jim and Madeline Hawley of Winters; brother, Ivan Marion of Lincoln, Arkansas; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Marion, in 1991, and brothers, Jack and Dan Marion, in 1983. Family and friends gathered at the Winters Community Center on Tuesday, Jan. 16, where they laughed, cried, sang and shared a meal in honor and celebration of Mr. Marion’s life. Contributions maybe made in Mr. Marion’s memory to the Jim Marion Memorial Fund at First Northern Bank in Winters.
