Mabry passed away on Feb. 20, 2006 at Stollwood Convalescent Hospital, at the age of 85. He was born in Wellington, Texas on March 28, 1920 to John and Arlena (Vincent) Mabry. John had been a resident of Yolo County for the last 29 years. He had graduated Huber High School in Imperial Valley and in 1941 enlisted in the U.S. Navy where be honorably served until 1947. Having been on many cruises and sailing around the world on ships such as the USS Helena, USS Tolwa, USS Freemont and the USS Eltince; he was awarded service medals including the Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Defense Ribbon with five stars, the American Defense Ribbon, the Navy Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal for his World War II service and was also a Pearl Harbor survivor. Returning to California, John went to work for Caltrans where he started working on the Bay Bridge, then on projects in Fairfield, Westwood, Placerville and Woodland, where he retired after 30 years as a Superintendent of Highways. John's greatest joy was spending time with his family and his friends. While living in Fairfield he was instrumental in the organization of the Dad's Club. His favorite pastimes were playing cards, square dancing, camping and cooking. He considered himself somewhat of a "pool shark" and had a great sense of humor. John enjoyed his cooking, and was known to his family and friends for his famous chili beans. He was always happy to be "on his road trips" visiting family members and friends. One of his favorite memories was his trip to the Indy 500 with his daughter Ruth. All who knew him will miss his independent spirit, integrity and sense of humor. Mr. Mabry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mabel (Cook) Mabry of Woodland, and daughters Ruth Ann Nelson of Fairview, Texas, Edith Louise Happs of Sacramento and Wilma Arlena Stowe of Woodland. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Cameron, Heather, Jeffrey, Jennifer, April and Timothy and eight great-grandchildren. Respecting John's last wishes, private burial services were held. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Mr. Mabry's life from 12 noon until 2 p.m. on March 4, 2006 at the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, Post 1985, 345 W. Kentucky Ave., Woodland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in Mr. Mabry's memory be made to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Kraft Bros.
