She was one of 15 children. In 1940, Lois moved to California where she met and married Leonard Murphy Sr. After Leonard Murphy's death in 1977, she married Frank "Tony" Rhodes in 1979. Mr. Rhodes died in 1984. She leaves behind her son, L.K. "Smokey" Murphy and wife, Polly; her daughter, Norine "Buni" Panick, and her daughter-in-law, Judy Murray and husband, Barry. Lois lived a full and wonderful life, especially cherishing her role as Grandma to Christopher Murphy and his wife, Laurie Kohn; Patrick "Chip" Murphy and his fiance Tiffany Bos, Morgan Panick, and, most recently, the light of her life, her great-grandson, Aidan Kohn Murphy. She is also survived by her sisters, Sr. Esther Hofschulte of Milwaukee, Ruth Hofschulte of New Orleans, Virginia Berkmeyer of Phoenix and many nieces and nephews. Lois served as executive director of the March of Dimes in Woodland beginning in the 1950s and became their national consultant for Mothers' Marches in the late 1970s. Later in the Santa Cruz area, she was the registrar for Soquel High School until she retired in 2002. Lois had a life-long commitment to volunteer work and to support for the less fortunate. In Woodland, she was very active in both school and community work. In Santa Cruz, she volunteered at Dominican Hospital and two local soup kitchens. Most recently in Sacramento, she was a fixture on Sundays at the volunteer desk at Mercy San Juan Hospital and on monthly Mondays with Presentation Church's team at Loaves and Fishes. Her sense of responsibility - spending the time it takes to do a good job - was an inspiration to everyone who worked with her. In addition, she had passionate interests in Notre Dame football, good books, current events and politics, especially the work of good Democrats. Always active and healthy until her last 10 days, she will be remembered for her energy - the 3 miles she walked each morning, the soups and brownies she brought to places she worked, the cookies she baked for her grandchildren and the pies and dinners she made for holidays. She was a wonderful, giving person and made many friends in Woodland, Santa Cruz and Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to Maryhouse at Loaves and Fishes, Sacramento, the Jesuits or a charity of your choice.
