He spent his early years in Santiago and returned to the U.S. in 1925. He attended schools in Berkeley and graduated from University High School. After graduation, his love of the cowboy lifestyle led him to work on Nevada ranches. With WWII looming, he joined the Army Air Corps and became a B-17 pilot. Shot down over Germany on his 8th mission, he was a POW for more than a year, and escaped twice. Tales of his wartime exploits awed his children and others throughout his life. Under the GI bill, he attended UC Davis Veterinary School and was a member of the first graduating class in 1952. While at UCD, he met and married his wife, Elaine. They settled in Woodland where Rod became a partner at the Yolo Veterinary Clinic for 27 years until his retirement in 1979. In retirement, he and Elaine traveled extensively, including several house exchanges in other countries. He volunteered to help build needed facilities in a small village in Nicaragua. His many avocations included woodworking, stained glass, sculpture, gardening, photography and leather working. He was well known and loved for his engaging storytelling, his wit and humor, and his congenial spirit. Death occurred peacefully at home at age 87. He was preceded in death by his son, Patrick, and sisters Helen Harman and Jean Coughlin. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elaine; daughter Cindy and husband Alan of Corvallis, Ore.; son Eric and wife Debbie of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister Sylvia Moore of Seattle, Wash.; grandson Matt, granddaughters Katie and Deanna, and great-granddaughter Alexa. Memorial service will be Monday, Feb. 6, 1 p.m., at St. John's Church, 434 Cleveland St. The family requests memorials be directed to the charity of their choice.
