Mrs. Thorn was 95. Born on Dec. 11, 1910, she was the daughter of Hayes Harvey Gable and Frances Farish Gable of the Diamond G Ranch in Hungry Hollow (now home of the R.H. Phillips Winery). A member of a pioneering Yolo County family, Mrs. Thorn's grandfather, Amos Gable, built the Gable Mansion located on the northeast corner of First and Cross streets in Woodland. The home is now owned by Starr and Jeff Barrow, and is an historical monument. From the Diamond G Ranch, Mrs. Thorn and her siblings rode their ponies, Dot and Dash, to Fairview School before attending and graduating from Esparto High School. Mrs. Thorn later graduated with a B.A. degree from Mills College in the Bay Area. She then taught elementary school in Zamora, Esparto and at Canyon School in Capay Valley. In 1952, Mrs. Thorn began work at Cal-Western Life Insurance Co. as an accountant in the Group Health Claims Dept. and later advanced to Group Claims Examiner where she remained as such until retirement in 1976. Upon retirement, Mrs. Thorn found a new life as an artist, excelling in her studies with area artist James Estey. Her paintings have won several awards and are cherished by her family. In addition to her art work, Mrs. Thorn enjoyed traveling to many destinations around the world, including Fiji, Tahiti and South America. Her last trip, at age 76, was highlighted by a mule ride to the top of Machu Picchu in Peru. Mrs. Thorn was preceded in death by her parents, brother Hayes Gable, Jr., and sister Kathryn Gable Gordon, as well as her niece, Sara Gordon Carr. She is survived by sister-in-law Margaret Lovdal Gable of West Sacramento, nieces Rebecca Gordon Jenness of Woodland, Kennalee Gable of West Sacramento, Georgiana Gable Gordon of Yankton, Oregon, Kathryn Gordon Griffin of Arbuckle, and nephews Charles Milford Gordon of Capay Valley, and Hayes Harvey Gable III of Roseville. She is also survived by 12 grand nieces and nephews and 10 great- grand nieces and nephews. In accordance with Mrs. Thorn's wishes, there will be no services.
