Mr. Van Ruiten was born Jan. 22, 1960 in Woodland. He grew up in a farming community in Sutter Basin where he spent 20 years helping run the family business. He helped found the Sugar Bowl Academy and eventually gave up farming to became a full time resident in Truckee, working at Sugar Bowl as events manager and involved with the sports of skiing, ski racing, snowboarding and teaching. Survivors include Mr. Van Ruiten's children, Elisa, Nicholas and Samantha Van Ruiten of Truckee; the mother of his children, Patti Van Ruiten; his parents, George and Kay Van Ruiten of Robbins; one brother; six sisters; and 22 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, James Andrew. The family requests that memorials in Mr. Van Ruiten's name may be directed to the David Van Ruiten Memorial Fund, c/o Sugar Bowl Ski Area, P.O. Box 5, Borden, CA 95724. Services: Services were held in Truckee and Sugar Bowl Nov. 10 to 12. The Truckee-Tahoe Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
