Robert H. Blackford Jr Rites scheduled Monday
Funeral services are scheduled at 11 am Monday at Lipp & Sullivan Chapel for 
Robert Hartley Blackford, a well known sheep rancher and former Wheatland 
mayor. He died in his Wheatland home March 12, 1987 at the age of 70 following 
a short illness. Blackford, who was born in his parent's home on Olive Street 
in Wheatland was a descendent of the Cyrus Dam and Price Blackford families 
that settled in Wheatland in the 1850's. He attended Wheatland schools, 
graduated from Southern California Military Academy in Long Beach and the 
University of California; Berkeley. He was a third generation sheep raiser. He 
served as president of the California Wool Growers Association and the American 
Sheep Producers Council. He was a licensed California livestock appraiser. He 
was named Live stockman of the Year in ceremonies at the San Francisco Cow 
Palace in 1977. He served 16 years on the Wheatland City Council, several of 
those years as mayor. He was serving as chairman of the Wheatland Water 
District Board of Directors at the time of his death attending his last meeting 
of that group Tuesday night. He was the past president of the Marysville Bridge 
Club and of the Wheatland Supper Club; a former member of the Wheatland lion's 
Club; and a charter member and first president of the Wheatland Historical 
Society. Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Blackford of Wheatland; a daughter, 
Barbara Ann Hofman of Lincoln; a son, Robert Joseph Blackford of Wheatland; a 
brother Leonard Blackford of Sacramento; a sister, Madeleine Bowling of Castro 
Valley; his step mother, Mrs Robert H Blackford Sr of Wheatland; six 
grandchildren and one great grandchild. the Rev Francis X Petraglia of Grace 
Episcopal Church of Wheatland will officiate at the services. Burial will be in 
Wheatland Cemetery.
