Joseph R Hartley, 89, considered an authority on early California history, died 
in his Wheatland home early today. Hartley was a retired livestock raiser and 
writers from all parts of the country at times called on him for knowledge of 
early California days. Hartley was a resident of the Wheatland district for the 
past 30 years and was a native of Nevada county. He was a charter member of the 
Islam Temple of the San Francisco Shriner's, Sacramento order of the Scottish 
Rite, Marysville Knights Templar and the Masonic lodge of Wheatland. He is 
survived by a son, William Hartley; two grandsons, Donald and Robert Hartley; a 
sister, Martha Blackford, all of Wheatland. funeral arrangements will be 
announced later by Lipp & Sullivan.
