George W. Hazzard Came To Colorado In 1859 And Worked In Gold Mines. Special To The News Brighton, Colo. July 27 - George W. Hazzard, who came to Colorado during the gold excitement of 1859 and settled on a farm in the Platte Valley near Brighton in August of that year, died of senility at 10:45 o'clock this morning. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 p. m. Sunday. Hazzard was born at Benton, Wis., on December 7, 1837. In the spring of 1859, in company with his brother William, Andrew Hagus and Mr. Dornoloan, he came by "prairie schooner" to the new gold fields of the Pike's Peak country. After working in the placer mines around Central City and Idaho Springs for a few weeks, the boys hurried back to the Platte Valley near the village of Denver and settled on some of the most fertile quarter sections, which they held as homes for more than fifty years. Hazzard was a subscriber for The News for fifty years. He is survived by his wife, formerly Mary Blundell, whom he married on July 28, 1863; one son, Albert G. of Brighton; two daughters, Mrs. Dollie Swain of Goldfield, Nev., and Mrs. Emma Alter of Reno, Nev.
