Alamosa 63rd County Set Up



Alamosa County, Colorado's newest county, was created by the State

Legislature in 1913 from portions of Conejos and Costilla Counties.



The bill organizing the county was introduced by the late William H.

(Billy) Adams, then state senator from Conejos County, who later became

one of Colorado's best-known governors.



Spanish explorers may have visited the area as early at 1600, but there

was no colonization.  Zebulon Montgomery Pike, who discovered Pikes

Peak, crossed what is now Alamosa County in the winter of 1806-1807, and

camped on the banks of the Rio Grande near the site of the present city

of Alamosa, the county seat.



Communities began to flourish in the area after the Rio Grande Railroad

arrived in 1878.
