Newspapers: Marion Armstrong Cooley, Clipping from Denver newspaper April 23, 1938 http://files.usgwarchives.net/co/boulder/newspapers/cooley.txt Donated by Gwen Griggs May 2, 2002 CONFESSED BANK BANDIT WILL NOT BE BROT TO STATE BOULDER, CO APRIL 22, 1938 (AP) Boulder County officer decided Friday night they would not give Marion Armstrong Cooley, 43, a free ride to Colorado just because he was quoted by California officers as admitting participation in a $12,000 bank robbery six years ago. Sheriff George Richart, who said he was notified that Cooley was under arrest at San Bernadino, Calif. and contended he was a companion of Bates in a robbery of the First State bank at Louisville, Colo. on Jan. 23rd, 1932, declared Calif. could keep the man. After a conference Friday afternoon with Deputy District Attorney James D. Lewis, the sheriff said, "Boulder County Officials were agreed Cooley was interested in Colorado's famous weather." "Returning Cooley to Colorado would be too expensive," the sheriff said. "Besides we couldn't recover any of the banks money. His partner in the case is in prison for life." "Let California keep Cooley." Cooley surrendered Thursday at Barstow, Calif. and told officers he was wanted for the Louisville robbery, Richart said he was notified. Bates, the sheriff said, served a term in prison for the Louisville robbery and is now a convict in Alcatraz Federal Prison. Bates was one of several convicted in connection with the kidnapping of Charles Urachel Oklahoma City oil man. Richart said Cooley told California officers he had done three stretches in the Colorado Pen and I want to go back there to die. He contended he was dying of tuberculosis but thought the Colorado climate might help him. Police records showed Cooley received a total maximum sentence of 52 years in prison for various crimes, and because of the parole law he served about 13 years. His first "job" records show was a robbery at Fort Morgan, Colo., near his hometown of Wray, Colo in 1916. =================================================== Contributed for use by the USGenWeb Archive Project (http://www.usgenweb.org) and by the COGenWeb Archive Project USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
