The purpose is to promote the advancement of literary education, public speaking and debating, good fellowship, achievement of success through determination and united effort. They have vied with each other in giving instructive Monday afternoon programs, they have "spelled each other down", they have sung in unison, they have debated on all sorts of subjects and altogether have been a great help to every branch of school activity. Some of the best public programs have been the direct results of the efforts of the literary societies. DEBATES -- Argumentation is an important branch of literary accomplishment. The Literary Societies have done much in making it an important part of our school. Each society held debates at various programs, and at other times challenged the opposing society. Attempts were made to debate with other high schools, but distance has always been too great a barrier. The question discussed at the spring term debate was: "Resolved: That the United States Senators should be elected by direct vote of the people." The debaters were Robert McCRUMB and Maude WINDER, Affirmative; Bert SEIP and Raymond RUSSELL, Negative. The commencement debate has become a regular feature and this year the subject will be, "Resolved, That it is the right and duty of the state to supervise and control primary and secondary education." [Page 30] THE ORCHESTRA-- The Orchestra of the Cheyenne County High School was organized on January 17, 1913. Although this was not accomplished until late in the school year, great enthusiasm is shown by the teachers and pupils, as well as by friends of the school. The orchestra has been under the leadership of Mr. V. JOHNSON, assisted by Mr. NYLANDER. The pupils are showing their appreciation for their instruction by doing their very best, and so are progressing rapidly. The members are: First Violin - Rosamond WELLS and Nathan SCHUELKE Second Violin - Raymond RUSSELL First Cornet - Robert McCRUMB Second Cornet - Elbert PLESSINGER Tenor - Eli SCHUELKE Clarinet - Aaron SCHUELKE Cello - Louis HOLLENBAUGH Mandolin - Zora CURTIS Piano - Leta TRUMBOR [Page 31] THE C.C.H.S. GLEE CLUB -- The organization most enthusiastically supported by our high school is the Glee Club. As such it has passed many trials and tribulations, but by tenacity and labor incessant it has conquered its foes and laughed to scorn the unfair critics, and is now journeying toward the land of success. The High School Glee Club was organized in 1911 under the leadership of the various music instructors, and the good work was continued this year under the leadership of Miss TERHUNE. Music in school is one of our prides. The Glee Club has helped in public entertainments, it has helped bring assembly singing to a higher standard of excellence, and has done much to centralize school life. ---------------------------------------------------- [Page 32] ALUMNI -- The Alumni of the Cheyenne County High School organized Feb. 15 1913, for the purpose of perpetuating the associations of the high school days, to work for the furtherance of the high school cause in our county, and to keep alive their interest in education.
