Clark Elderfinder@aol.com November 3, 2002, 9:10 am Funeral Services For Nathan Stucker Are Held Sunday Funeral services for Nathan Wilkins Stucker, long time Paonia resident who passed away at his home here on Wednesday evening, Sept. 2, were held Sunday, Spt. 6, at the Christian Church with the Rev. B.Y. Baughman, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating. Interment was in the cemetery at Hotchkiss. Vocal music for the service was provided by Dr. Thayer Morris. Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Stucker, Leonard Reed, Paul Reed, Lloyd Reed, Leroy Reed, Harry Stucker and Earl Stucker. Nate Stucker was born in Washington County, Iowa, on July 9, 1887, a son of Bishop Larkin Stucker and Jane DeLong Stucker. On May 12, 1902, he was married to Nettie May Reed at Crawford. A retired farmer, Mr. Stucker had been a resident of Colorado since 1895. He came to Paonia 23 years ago. In 1898 he opened and operated a coal mine known as the Stucker Mine. He was an early pioneer of the North Fork Valley and helped develop the Oak Mesa Reservoir, the Fire Mountain ditch and the Co-Op Telephone system. One of the first seven telephones was installed in his home. He also saw the first railroad and power line brought into the valley. Other interests during his lifetime were freighting logs from Black Mesa with a four-horse team, operating a large cattle ranch near Crawford, and in 1918 he moved his family to a fruit ranch at Hotchkiss. About 1938 Mr. and Mrs. Stucker retired to their present home in Paonia. Mr. Stucker is survived by his wife; a son, Ray Stucker of Artesia, Calif.; six daughters, Mrs. Bernice Penfold of Delta, Mrs. Marie Jones of Norwalk, Calif., Mrs. Bertha Ankenman of Naturita, Mrs. Kathryn Besseltine of Fruita, Mrs. Carrie Lollar of Norwalk, Calif., and Mrs. Frances Joanes of Camino, Calif.; and a sister, Mrs. Callie Cox of Palacios, Texas.
