BROOKS IS DEAD; DENVER PIONEER AND MEMBER OF LEADING PRINTING FIRM ------------- Partner in Smith-Brooks Company Succumbs to Illness in California. George W. Brooks, who, with Orville L. Smith, established the Smith-Brooks Printing Company over twenty one years ago, died yesterday at San Diego, California, where he went for his health. Though ill several years, the death of Brooks was not expected. He was afflicted with kidney trouble and was 54 years old. John B. Brooks, a son. left Denver for San Diego and will bring his father's body here for interment. Mrs. Brooks was with her husband at the time of his death. Brooks was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1855. He lived with his parents in that city until he was 22 years old. He came to Denver in 1878. Four years later he married Miss Fannie Warner of Ohio. He engaged in the printing business, and in 1890, when The News dropped its job printing department, Brooks and Orville Smith purchased the job printing plant of this paper. Through excellent business methods, the partners built up the plant into one of the largest printing concerns in the United States, a con- cern whose reputation is nation-wide. Brooks was Vice President and Treasurer of the Smith-Brooks Company. He was also identified with other business enterprises of the city. He made frequent trips to the Pacific coast in hopes of obtaining relief. He and his wife left here in March for California, and while he did not gain, he was not dangerously ill until shortly before his death. Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, John B. and E.
