"He had a passion for helping the people of this country," said Mr. Brotzman's son-in-law, John Caldwell, of Longmont. "That's really what he dedicated his life to." Mr. Brotzman, a Colorado native who represented the 2nd Congressional District for a decade and also served as a U.S. attorney, died of cancer in Alexandria, Va., on Wednesday. He was 82. Walt Klein, a longtime political Republican consultant, said that even though Mr. Brotzman was often in the East, his heart was in Colorado. "There's something special about Western values and Western independence and warmth, and Don Brotzman always reflected that," Klein said. "He could talk about sophisticated issues of the day, but at heart he reflected the values of Colorado." Mr. Brotzman was born June 28, 1922, in Logan County. He was a tenor saxophonist and three-sport athlete at Sterling High School. In 1939, he won a football scholarship to the University of Colorado. His studies were postponed because of World War II, during which he served as an Army officer in Yokohama, Japan, and the Philippines. Mr. Brotzman wed Louise Reed in 1944 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He returned to the University of Colorado to earn business and law degrees. He began working as a lawyer in Boulder in 1950, the same year he was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. He also served in the state Senate. Local media named him the outstanding freshman member of both chambers. After unsuccessful runs for governor in 1954 and 1956, Mr. Brotzman was appointed Colorado U.S. attorney in 1959. Mr. Brotzman was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1962, when fellow lawmakers named him president of the Republican freshman class. Former U.S. Sen. Bill Armstrong called Mr. Brotzman a trailblazer in politics. "I remember Don Brotzman as a man of principle and integrity, one of the finest public servants our state has ever produced. (He was) a guy who was a great mentor to me, particularly in the '60s and '70s when I was in the state legislature, and then when I was elected in 1972 to serve alongside him in the U.S. House of Representatives," Armstrong said. "He'll be greatly missed." When Mr. Brotzman left politics, he worked in government relations at the Rubber Manufacturers Association. He retired in 1989. His first wife, Louise, died in 1995. He married Gwendolyn Davis in 1996 in Sarasota, Fla. Mr. Brotzman is survived by his wife, a brother, a daughter and son who live in Colorado, a stepson and six grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday in Alexandria, Va. A second memorial service is being planned in Boulder.
