LAW SCHOOL DIES IN HOSPITAL Seventy-Four-Year-Old Educator Was Idol of Boulder Campus, and, Altho Scheduled to Retire Three Years Ago, Had Been Persuaded to Stay. [photo] Dean John D. Fleming, head of the law school of the University of Colorado since 1903 and widely known as an educator, died at St. Luke's hospital early Monday as the result of an operation for kidney trouble a week ago. Dean Fleming, who was 74 years old, was the idol of the Boulder campus. He was scheduled to be retired three years ago under the Carnagie foundation plan, but the university was unable to obtain an educator of such high caliber to take his place and prevailed upon Dean Fleming to continue in the position. Dean Fleming was born in Elizaville, Ky., in 1852, the son of John Faris Fleming and Amelia Perrin Anderson Fleming. Col. John Fleming, great grandfather of Dean Fleming, was the founder of Fleming county, Kentucky, and the family traces its American origin back to the landing of Sir Thomas Fleming at Jamestown, Va., in 1616. ATTENDED RURAL SCHOOL. Dean Fleming attended the rural schools of Fleming county and later entered a classical academy at Flemingburg, Ky. His higher education was obtained at Centre college at Danville, Ky., and he was graduated with an A. B. degree in 1875. He was awarded the John M. Harlan prize for proficiency in English composition. While teaching at the Boys' high school at Louisville, Ky., he studied law at the University of Louisville, receiving his LL. B. degree in 1878. He then entered the University of Virginia for a postgraduate course. Coming to Colorado he entered the law office of James T. Marshall at Leadville. Mr. Marshall was president of the Robert E. Lee Mining company of Leadville, and for three years Dean Fleming was manager of that company. He became mayor of Leadville in 1888, and at the end of the term was made city solicitor. In 1889 President Benjamin F. Harrison appointed him United States attorney for Colorado, and it was during that period that he moved to Denver and later retired to private practice. MADE LAW SCHOOL DEAN IN 1903. He was made professor of law and dean of the law school of the University of Colorado in 1903, and had specialized in mining law and Irrigation and water rights. Centre college conferred an honorary LL. D. degree upon him in 1910. He was director of the Allegheny Mining company of Leadville up to the time of his death and was also a director of the Gold King Extension Mining company of San Juan county. He is survived by his wife, a son, William Donaldson Fleming, medical officer in the army, stationed at Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Frederick Wadley, both of Denver. Dean Fleming was president of the Colorado Bar association in 1916-17. He was a member of the American Bar association and the American Law institute and was one of the founders of the University club and the Denver club.
