William Bird Johnson, a pioneer of Denver and an employee of the Rocky Mountain News in various capacities for twenty-five years, died yesterday morning at his home, 730 Fox Street, of a complica- tion of heart and liver trouble. He was 68 years of age. Johnson ws born in Illinois, but when 14 years of age went with his parents to Wisconsin, where he became a printer's apprentice. Johnson came to Denver and worked in a printing shop in Auraria. Some time later he assisted William Train Muir in editing an anti-Lincoln paper in Golden, and then returned to Denver and cast his lot with the Rocky Mountain News. He remained with this newspaper until 1884 and then enlisted under Col- onel George C. Shoup in a campaign against the Indians. He was under arms for six months and then chose Central City as his new field. Johnson was married in 1869. Six years later he returned to Denver and went to work for John Arkins, then foreman of the Tribune, and when Col- onel Arkins bought into The News in 1880, Johnson returned to this news- paper and remained with it until about seven years ago, when he retired. At the time he left the employ of the News he was foreman of the mail room. Johnson is survived by a wife, Mrs. Margaret Johnson, and six children, Mrs. Dr. A. A. Rittenour, Mrs. Harvey Cordingly, Mrs. Florence Barron, Paul John- son, foreman of the mail room of the Chicago American, Earl Johnson, foreman of the mail room of the Denver Times, and Archie Johnson, a civil engineer of this city. Funeral services will be from the family residence.
