E. KELLY, FORMER U. S. ATTORNEY FOR COLORADO, IS DEAD Prominent Chicago Lawyer Succumbs After Year of Ill Health [photo] Harry Eugene Kelly, 65, former United States district attorney for Colorado and a leading lawyer in Chicago, died Tuesday at the home of his son in Woodstock, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, after a year of ill health. Mr. Kelly was a native of Des Moines, Ia., and spent his youth there. He was graduated at the University of Iowa and then edited a newspaper in Litchfield, Ill. Later he was principal of the Litchfield high school, superintendent of schools in Sullivan, Ill., and an instructor of English literature at the University of Iowa. Mr. Kelly came to Denver in 1899 and studied law at Denver university. He was admitted to the Colorado bar in 1900. He practiced law with Charles H. Haines and was counsel in this region for the Western Union Telegraph company. He was elected to the Colorado house of representatives in 1906. He then was made assistant United States attorney and later became United States district attorney. He had lived in Chicago since 1916. Mr. Kelly was a member of the Mile High club of Denver, the Union League club of Chicago and the University club of Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edna McElyray Kelly, sister of H.W. McElyray of Denver; a son, William M., and a stepson, William A., both of Chicago.
