Vigil, Colorado's first Hispanic U.S. attorney and a longtime Democratic Party activist, died Thursday. He was 86. The resident of both Denver and Trinidad served as the state's U.S. attorney under the Truman administration from 1949 to 1953. Vigil was known for prosecuting organized crime and cracking down on gambling and prostitution, according to his son, David Vigil. President Dwight Eisenhower removed him from office, triggering a controversial Senate investigation chaired by Sen. Estes Kefauver, because prosecutions of high-profile Colorado mob figures had been interrupted, David Vigil said. A graduate of the University of Colorado, Vigil served as deputy district attorney for Colorado's Third Judicial District until World War II, when he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard until 1946. He later made several unsuccessful runs for elected office, including bids for state attorney general and the 4th Congressional District seat. Aside from his son, David, of Denver, Vigil is survived by his daughter Marcia Vigil Kunich of Washington, D.C. and his former wife, Kathleen (Leibert) Vigil of Trinidad. He will be buried Friday at his family's cemetery at Vigil, west of Trinidad. A memorial service is planned in Denver at 10 a.m., May 17 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
