Ward, Jr. Lawyer, Long Prominent in Political Life of Denver, Succumbs Thomas Ward, Jr., 69, prominent in the political life of the city for 43 years, died at his home 841 Oneida st., at 11 a.m. yesterday. In 1912 he was appointed U.S. district attorney and was well known for his fight on crime and vice. Mr. Ward came to Denver in 1884 to begin a law practice. Shortly after arrival he was appointed deputy district attorney under H. E. Luthe. He afterwards served as assistant city attorney under John F. Shaffroth and later was appointed by Isaac N. Stevens as chief deputy district attorney, serving three years. Named U.S. Attorney He had practiced law since, and at one time was attorney for the state board of stock inspection commissioners and for Cheyenne county. He was appointed U. S. district attorney to succeed Earl M. Cranston, who resigned. Mr. Ward was born on a farm near Fayette, Mo., in 1858. He went to country schools and at the age of 18 entered Central College, Mo., from which he was graduated with an M.A. degree. He was a friend of Theodore Roosevelt. Three Daughters Survive Surviving Mr. Ward are three daughters, Sue, Margaret, and Alice, one son Harry; a sister, Margaret Ward, all of Denver; and four brothers, Ethelbert of Denver, Rev. John C. of Burlington, N. J., Maj. Ralph T. of Washington, D. C., and William F. of Columbia, S. C. His wife died last winter. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at St. John's Cathedral. Interment will be in Fairmount cemetery.
