All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/co/cofiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Linda Tremper ltremper1@comcast.net December 31, 2006, 12:01 am newspaper clipping Death of Dad Hager William Hager a prospector of the pioneer type now rapidly disappearing in the most of the old mining camps of the state,died at his cabin home here at about midnight Wednesday April 3,1918 of lung trouble.He was in his sixty fourth year had been showing signs of debility for several months and was taken down with acute pneumonia about a week before death brought him release.William or "Dad" Hager as he was familiarly known was a native of the Empire State having first seen the light of day at Stony Point,Rockland County,New York.He first came to this camp about twenty years ago but did not remain here long at that time.In 1912 he returned to Rico and lived here continuosly from that year until his death.He engaged almost exclusively in prospecting,locating and partially developing a number of promising placer claims about four miles below Rico.From these he sluiced considerable free gold,but hardly enough to provide him a comfortable livelihood.He was known to be a man of his word,unobtrusive in his ways,yet always kindly as his nickname indicates.That he was a good citizen,patriotic to the core,is shown in the fact he distinguished himself locally by making things mighty unpleasant for certain offensive characters whom he caught in the act of desecrating the American flag.William Hager had been married but left no children.Some brothers,a sister and nieces all residing in New York state survive him. Additional Comments: I found this newspaper clipping in my Great Great Grandmother Susan Hager Roser Bible this was her youngest brother.Family story is he ran off as a young man to escape a relentless female admirer and joined the Gold Rush.
